My brother-in-law, Don Henson, let me know that there was someone I would be interested in seeing a note from - on this Guest Page. Thanks, Don! I have been on the web site in the past, but I see there are many improvements since my last visit! Congratulations on a job well done. Sac City will always be "home" to me. I still get back once-in-a while to see family, and for the big Presley reunion the third week end in July!

My twin sister, Sonia and I (Sally) were born in Sac City and wanted to respond when I saw this website. We lived across from the old high school and have such wonderful memories. It was great growing up in this small town and I still get back once in awhile. We moved in 7th grade, but I always will remember the great childhood friends that we had. Linda Love(Hansen), Karen Waddell (?) Stephanie Recoff, Sandy Stevenson and so many more. My aunt and uncle, (Jake and Crystal Mann) owned a funeral home on main street and I still enjoy seeing the house whenever I am back. If anyone from the class of 1963 is around would love to have you say Hi.

Earl Dew was my uncle who was my mothers brother. My mother is Bethel Dew. I sent you a email and I can make a pic. for you of Earl. How my grandfather John Dew ended up in Sac was after WW1 and he had a good buddy in the army who was from Sac City named Howard Stevens and instead of going back to TN. he came home with Howard to Sac City met Mable Hass, got married, started a family and then started horse racing at county fairs and later at AKSARBEN race track in Omaha. It's neet how the internet and this website brings old relatives in contact with each other! Any of Howard Stevens relatives are welcome to contact me also.

We don't get to Sac city very often since Doc and Barb passed away. We do stop every year on our way to Okoboji and spend the night with Ruth and Wimp Mohr which is nice. I am a city boy now,[Omaha is the smallest city my wife and I have lived] but I am very proud to call Sac city home.

I lived in Sac City from 1979-81. My first two children were born there and my memories of this town are very positive. It's nice to look at the website and see all the changes that have occurred. You've done a wonderful job of promoting the town. I have lost track of a friend who lived in Sac City when I did and she could still be there for all I know. Her name is Janet Austin. We met at Lamaze classes when we were preparing to have our babies. I would love to find her and see her again. If anyone knows if she's still in Sac City or if she's moved, how I could contact her, I would appreciate it. She was so nice to me when I first came to town not knowing anyone. Our friendship blossomed but sadly, we've lost touch. Any help anyone can give me would be wonderful.
Thanks so much.

Hi Jack, My uncle Larry Dew may have that pic your talking about. The Pic you have of Bob Feller and which is Earl and not Dale Dew, Dale was never a national champion however was still a very good jockey. I have a pic here of Earl and Jack Dempsey, the heavy weight boxer. Earl is on Jacks shoulders, By chance is that the pic you have, Dempsey has slicked black hair and a large Italian nose? Yours very well could be Bob Feller, does he have the Cleveland uniform on? Earl was very famous and knew alot of famous people like Bing Crosby, Joe Louis, and many others. Thanks Jack for trying to get Earl into the Iowa sports list for famous sports stars. Also thanks to Jerry Wyat and his family for the nice monument at the fairgrounds they have made for Earl.

Message Subject: Response to Roland Rogers re Earl Dew

Dear Roland,

I grew up in Sac City (Class of 1948), and I knew Dale Dew, Earl's younger brother, but Dale had left Sac City before I had the opportunity to know him.

I have a photo from the Des Moines Register sports section in 1941 showing Dale Dew on the shoulders of Bob Feller. It was taken at a convention in Des Moines honoring Dale as the National Riding Champion and Feller for winning a pitching title while playing for the Cleveland Indians.

I have tried to find out why Earl Dew is not on the Iowa Sports Honor Roll (?) but have not received a reply. There is a beatiful gate honoring Earl at the fairs grounds in Sac City. A previous responder mentioned that you are a member of the Class of 1939. If so, you must have known my brother, Jerry Goodwin.

I hope this is helpful to your search.

Hi Roland I see you were from the class of 1939. You may have known Earl since he was 19 when he was killed in his trajic accident in 1941 or you may also know Dale Dew (Bunchie his brother). I did want to add a copie of the movie script "A Time To Keep" and also wanted to add to James Wyat story on Earl that Earl was booked to ride Whirlaway in the 1941 Derby and Eddie Arcaro took his place on the booking because of his trajic death in Mexico. Whirlaway was 1 or 11 triple crown winners , my uncle was known to be a better jockey than Eddie but he and Eddie were friends and if he had a choice for someone to take his place on the mount he would have picked Eddie.

Script Logline: Iowan Earl Dew rises from the county fair circuit to become America's 1940 jockey champion, by one win, on Dec. 31 at Santa Anita. Along the way he triumphs over a terrific battle with rival W. L. Taylor, overcoming injuries and encounters with criminal gambling interests. Based on a true story.

Hi Roland, I am Bethel Dews son and Earl and Dale (Bunchie) Dew are my uncles. This is a article from time magazine on his last ride, you are welcome to email me and anyone else who knew Dale or Earl, also there may be a movie coming out on Earls life which is out in two diff. markets from what the screenwriter has told me. It's a slim chance his script would be picked but it would be a great tribute to my family and the city of Sac City IA.

Sport
Last Ride
Monday, Feb. 10, 1941

Few 19-year-olds have been in the headlines as often as Jockey Earl Dew. Crowned U. S. riding champion of 1940, after nosing out another obscure 19-year-old named Walter Taylor on the very last day of the year, baby-faced Earl Dew was hailed as one of the most promising jockeys of his generation.

Last Sunday at Agua Caliente, the West Coast track where young Dew had won many a race, the management had arranged to present the champion with a gold watch, as a gala climax to the day's program. From the palatial stands the shrill yelling of 20,000 fans echoed through the mauve mountains, as field after field of selling platers pounded into the stretch.

In the sixth race, a sudden hush fell on the stands. Rounding the turn, Bosca, the favorite, tripped. Two other horses piled on her. Bosca lay on the track dead, her neck broken. Her jockey was rushed away in an ambulance. It was Earl Dew. Before he could get his applause and his gold watch, Hero Earl Dew died of a fractured skull.

In the mid-1930s, a young Sac City boy was riding "big time" race horses. He was killed in a race accident in Mexico, possibly Agua Caliente. Can anyone give me information about Earl?
=====================================================================================
The following is the information you were seeking ... the Sac City jockey was killed in Mexico in 1940. He has a memorial erected in his memory, I believe is located on Route 20, which was designed and built by the W.B. Wayt Monument Co. in memory of this Sac City horse jockey.

L.R. Wayt was my grandfather and Don and Nonie Stubbs Wayt were my parents, who also attended and graduated from Sac City HS.

I ran across your email while viewing the “Sac City Chamber of Commerce” website and happened to remember the name of Earl Dew.

We (my wife and I) will be attending the Sesquicentennial in July and we will be having a family reunion visit at this time with my brothers and sisters (Sally Gambetti Wayt of Escondido,CA … Danny Wayt of Wahpeton, ND … David Wayt of Ida Grove, IA and Wendy Wayt Staiert of Ankeny, IA.)

Jerry Wayt (Class of 1951)
=====================================================================================
The year-end jockeys' race in 1940 was a tough battle between two 19-year-old phenoms [sic, slang], Earl Dew and Walter Taylor, with Dew finishing on top by one winner when Taylor was injured in a spill on the last day of racing. After taking a few months off to relax after the long and tiring quest for the riding title, Earl Dew returned to the races in February at Golden Gate Fields. He subsequently accepted an invitation to Agua Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico to accept a diamond-studded watch in commemoration of his championship. Dew was not scheduled to ride at Caliente but decided accept a few mounts on the card—a decision which turned fatal. His mount crossed its legs and went down in a $700 claiming event throwing and trampling Dew on the track. He suffered a skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage and died in an ambulance on the way to San Diego. The nation was stunned—the leading rider in the country in 1940 had died barely two months into the 1941 racing season.

Only two weeks after the tragic death of Earl Dew, racing was shocked with another jockey fatality when Joseph Giangspro died as a result of injuries received in spill at Hialeah Park on Valentine's Day. Due to the efforts of the Jockeys' Guild and Hialeah management, an insurance policy was in place for jockeys. The track paid a premium of $80/day to Lloyd's of London to cover rider's injured or killed during races. Joseph Giangspro's heirs were the first in the history of racing to receive benefit from an insurance policy for jockeys. They received their check for $5,000 just a few days following his death.

Jockeys' Guild founder, Eddie Arcaro, swept the 1941 Triple Crown on Whirlaway to give racing its fifth winner of the classics. At the same time racing was being restricted in some venues due to the war effort. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, many tracks were leased or occupied by the military to store munitions and supplies.

Message Subject: 1908 22-inning Sac City-Schaller Baseball Game

Dear Chamber-Main Street of Sac City, Iowa,

I have been researching long baseball games since 1963, and am nearing publication date for my book on this topic.

For many years, I have been trying to find the details of the 22–inning game between Schaller and Sac City played on June 4, 1908 which ended in a 3-3 tie, but I have failed.

None of my inquiries to the mayor, newspaper, and library have been answered.

I am hopeful of learning the name of the ballfield and city where the game was played, the time it took to play the game, the time of day when the game was called off due to darkness, the attendance, the box score, etc.

Can you possibly direct me to any sort of an historical society which could help me?

Thank you very much.

Message Subject: For My Wife

First of all, I would really like to thank everyone for the tremendous response I've received from my previous post. Thank you. Now, I must apologise for the comment I made about my wife. She is really terrific and has a great sense of humor most of the time. However she was horrified to find out that I had (jokingly, of couse) made the statement that she had said "no one would remember me". She didn't really mean and was just joking (of course), but she said that just because I know how she meant it didn't mean that someone else reading it would. So... I apologise if there was any confusion. Thanks once again and if anyone would like to drop me a line, my email address is: jmhilk@ctcn.net.

My grandfather, Fred William (Will) Rogers, moved to Buena Vista County from Wisconsin in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's, he obtained a farm a few miles north of Sac City. I recall stories about a large scale tiling project that drained the area, and turned it into fine farm land. This may have been done in conjunction with the dredging of the Cedar River.

Can anyone give me information on this subject?

When i first found out how small this little town was, i was absolutly shocked. you see my grandpa grew up in Sac City iowa and al i heard for years and years from my mom was how georgious it was compared to here in the golden state. Tonight when my grandpa brought me onto this sight all i could think about was how cool it would be to know everyone in the town. My grandpa is Kelley Hoskins and he has got to be one of the coolest guys i know. Although most grandkids hate hearing about the olden days of when their grandparents are young, i love hearing about sac city and about how the town is. I also went online and saw all of the georgious homes and the city hall and the mansion that dinners take place. I always wonder if people are like the layed back people like in the movie Doc Hollywood and when i saw pictures of this little old city, i knew that life really was that great! CONGRATS SAC CITY!
